NURTURING CHILDREN TO REACH THEIR HIGHEST POTENTIAL

The route through childhood is shaped by many forces, and it differs for each of us. Our biological inheritance, the temperament with which we are born, the care we receive, our family relationships, the place where we grow up, the schools we attend, the culture in which we participate, and the historical period in which we live—all these affect the paths we take through childhood and condition the remainder of our lives. “

Our holistic approach to children’s health and nutrition, academic development and social/emotional well-being is the foundation by which your child will grow.

Our first mission is to build and nurture a relationship with each child and their family. We work collaboratively with each family to determine goals for the child and share with parents regularly to ensure these goals are met.

Our therapeutic classroom works to minimize the added stress of being in a school environment, providing calm and adaptive teaching and learning environments. This space takes into account the backgrounds and experiences of all the children and aims to create a sense of safety and home.

Spaces, activities and environment around us can have a big impact on how we feel, and what feels possible in that space.  Being aware of how space, and place, shapes how we feel about ourselves and each other is important to our overall well-being.

Both natural objects (like wood, stones and plants) and recycled materials (like plastic trays, pipes, material offcuts) are used to stimulate and deepen learning in the school.  HKCL aim to encourage empathy, the sustainable use of materials, and a kind resourcefulness that comes from being able to see new possibilities in natural and recycled objects and put them to use.

Children begin to grow seedlings inside prior to spring.

Then when the weather permits, they move the small plant outside to water and till the garden until harvest.

- John Lennon

“We've got this gift of love, but love is like a precious plant. You can't just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it's going to get on by itself. You've got to keep watering it. You've got to really look after it and nurture it.”
